The first residents of Pauma Valley were a small tribe of Indians, and the Paumas took their name from an Indian word which means "spring water". Several thousand Indians also inhabited the other valleys through which the San Luis Rey River passes, although centuries before Spaniards named it "San Luis Rey", the Indians called the river "Qee'sh". The tribes who lived in these valleys, most descended from Shoshonean stock, were gatherers and hunters. Description courtesy Paumavalley.net.
