Media Influences

Tagged in: school , movies , lifestyle , activities

Ever thought why there's so many young teens portraying the actions, speech and fashion of TV stars, singers and people they see through the media.  People like Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus and Chris Brown, what they do in their lives goes on to influence the actions of kids and teens who are seeing  them through the media.

Shows like Gossip Girls, Skins and Teen Mom, what are these shows telling kids and teens?  When did it become okay to sell the idea of drugs, sex, alcohol and bullying to our youth, if this is even okay at all.  When we turn on the television or go on the internet, we are bombarded by advertisements selling us products like weight loss pills, beauty cremes, fitness tools, what does that say to our kids, younger brother/sister, niece or nephews?

Research shows that some groups of teens that watch the same shows have the same low scores and grades in schools, as well as acting out and showcasing violent behavior.

When kids and teenagers watch television or utilize the media there are points in which  they could be negatively influenced, some of the influences can relate to

School
Stereotypes
Eating disorders
Body Dismorphic Disorder
Violence
Drug and Alcohol
Advertising and Commercials

Its good to have some entertainment in your life, however, we need to learn how to use it wisely and safely, it can also be a great use of information when needed.

Good Work Ethic

Posted by: mirian

It is out of our hands who we meet in life, someone who'd become our best friend or someone who we cannot stand to be a room with.  The only tool we have to deal with this is professionalism and work ethics.  Always remember that honesty is key, which includes work ethics, behavior, respect, communication, and interactions with other co-workers.

All of these components can lead us towards success and it can also help us achieve a lot of goals we want to accomplish for example if we provide a great environment to our fellow co-workers and we can work well in teams, then we can also look like a good role model to our employer. This can lead to better work ethics and better recommendations in the future when we decide to to transition to another job in another field, allowing you more opportunities.

You might be gaining skills and experiences from others without you even noticing it!

This can give you advantages over others, personally and professionally.  Maintaining a good relationship can lead to long term  friendship, referrals to jobs and opportunities.  Not very many teenagers or youth adults know what it means to work hard, ethics and responsibility.

On the other hand if you show that you're experienced, honest, hard working, and most of all reliable and that your appreciating the opportunity that your given, you look responsible and most important mature, compared to other workers trying to get hired, this benefits you, since your employer wouldn't want to loose an employer that brings in good hard work with good attitude.

As a teenager or a young adult, by having good work ethics, you can achieve or earn successful opportunities. This can make you have a great impact in your life.

Consequences of Procrastination

Something we can all relate to is procrastination.  Leaving something to the last minute, staying up all night to finish up a project, we've all done this and it seems that this habit gets worse with time.   Most of us would rather  do other things  such as: hanging out with friends, playing games, or sleep rather than read, do homework or our chores.

How does procrastination build itself, you ask?  Well, lets just say my mom asked me to clean up my room but instead I decide to watch television and told myself I will just do it tomorrow.

Tomorrow comes and your mom is upset and tells you to clean your room before doing anything else, when you start your friend calls to go to the arcade or hang out but you can't because you procrastinated and in turns made you miss out on a fun time with your friends.   Procrastination can affect your relationship, education, work and life.  Try not to tell yourself "I'll just do it later" soon enough later would be now and you would have so much to do and not enough time.

In conclusion, you shouldn't let wait till the last minute, procrastination will catch up with you in the near future.

Many high school students ask themselves what is college going be about, how their professors are going to be like, and more likely, if they're even going to make it through their classes.

Many of them believe that college is going to be a really hard experience they will have to go through, when really?! college is going to be the best years of their lives, as many college graduates affirmed.

K-12, everything was decided for you, what courses to take, when to go to class but college is different.  College leaves decisions to you, what classes to take, whether to come to class, the choices made daily are your responsibility.

Its good to take your classes seriously, however, also make sure you enjoy the experience!  Meet new people, learn and study new cultures, jobs and careers you enjoy, but always keep in mind that time management is the key to success.

Ever get stuck in on a research project, no ideas, no inspiration, no direction for what you want to do?

Probably everybody has gone through the same situation before.  However, not very many realize that there are tools that can make  this daunting task, simple.

1. Give yourself enough time to do research, finding useful articles, journals, or books will make the task of writing a research paper that much easier.

2. Avoid using Wikipedia as a source of information, at the same time, Wikipedia is can be used for ideas and jump start your research path.

3. Ask the librarian to give you some advice for free databases that may have information you can use, or how to utilize the library search to find books that relate to your topic.

4. Lastly, when in doubt, ask someone for help.  Clarification, restatement or the mere fact of hearing someone else explain the task to you may help you understand the prompt or directions clearly.
